This course is intended to provide graduate students and advanced
majors of all anthropological subfields with an introduction
to anthropological ethics and basic research practices.
The format will involve both lecture and seminar arrangements.
Substantial portions of the class are intended for group discussion
of various topics and for students reports. Topics include:
How to collect and analyze field or library data.
How to develop research questions.
How to count and obtain representativeness in data sampling.
Anthropological interpretative frameworks such as models, systems,
and structures.
Professional behavior in a university setting, in the field,
and in the private sector.
Ethical issues of conducting field work, repatriation, and artifact
marketeering.
How to debate.
How to write a book review.
How to write a grant or thesis proposal.
How to find a Ph.D. program or a job.
In essence this course should introduce you to how anthropologists
do what they do and perhaps provide a means for you to begin to
resolve a research topic and to determine the basic research strategies
to be invoked in your work. You will finish the class with a good
idea about what makes a successful anthropologist and how to find
a job in the field.
