The 200 field season was spent surveying
around Mokarta (10 km2). Preliminary survey results reveal marked differences
between the LBA and EIA valley hinterlands. The LBA landscape of Mokarta
is tightly concentrated around the top of the small hill. Five residential
clusters (less than 1 ha in size) were identified, and included surface
scatters of diagnostic pottery and other domestic items (e.g., roof tiles,
metal slag, whorls, grinding stones). Three necropoli of rock-cut chamber
tombs were located on the steep slopes nearby. We spent time excavating
at one of these, Pitrazzi.
