OUTCROP
A rock outcrop made with scrap pieces

My five year-old son wanted to make a piece of terrain for his pod racing miniatures. He had picked out a bunch of scrap styrofoam that were left over from other projects and stood them on end to simulate mountains, but they kept falling over. I suggested that we add sturdy base to hold them upright, and so this outcrop project was born.

We first took a rectangular piece of 3/4" styrofoam and my son then carved an irregular edge to it. He placed his outcrop pieces wheere he wanted them, and then I drew guide lines with a pencil. I then helped him cut irregular grooves to help steady the piece. He then inserted toothpicks to add further support.

He then added glue and assembled the various pieces... <

The pre-painted assemblage looked like this.

My son choose the paint color and painted it himself. I added a red wash and pearl highlights. After drying, I then coated the base with glue and my son dusted it with sand. I gave the sand a black wash. Micromachine Pod Racers race by.
