Pizza you say? No I am talking about the important step of basing your terrain. The pizza will become apparent in just a moment. In my opinion, a base needs to be solid enough to protect
either the cardboard buildings from the Mordheim set, or the posterboard or styroform
scratch-built creations you make yourself. A base, in my opinion, also needs to be
modular. I prefer that a base be a square rather than irregular, and uniform in size so that they
can easiler be placed in modular fashion.

This is what I use:
I buy a 8'x4' sheet of particle board at the local do-it-yourself center. I have the store cut it into four 1' wide strips (this cost me $4.00 USA for the board and $0.50 for the three cuts). Once home, I then cut the strips into the proper size that I need. Either 1'x1', 1'x6" or 6"x6". These sizes make each terrain piece modular and very interchangable with each other. Also, the particle board has a nice textured surface.
|
I prime each piece black, and then using the 1'x1' plastic mesh that comes with take-away pizzas (this mesh has diamond-shapes holes in it) as a template (see photo above), I spray each board with texture paint. The textured paint in combination with the pattern makes a raised cobble-like surface. I leave the center of each piece dark to represent the building foundation. |
